Aunque los dinosaurios continuaron siendo los dominadores absolutos del planeta, surgieron nuevos grupos y otros alcanzaron su m\u00e1ximo esplendor. En los continentes meridionales, los saur\u00f3podos, como el Argentinosaurus, segu\u00edan siendo los reyes de la tierra, mientras que en el norte su presencia era mucho m\u00e1s limitada. Los ornitisquios herb\u00edvoros, como el Iguanodon, se expandieron por casi todo el mundo, excepto en la Ant\u00e1rtida. Los mam\u00edferos, aunque peque\u00f1os y discretos, ya mostraban una gran variedad, como los que pertenec\u00edan a la familia de las musara\u00f1as, que viv\u00edan entre los bosques y matorrales.<\/p>\n<p>Un evento destacado durante la fauna del Cret\u00e1cico fue la r\u00e1pida expansi\u00f3n de las plantas con flor, impulsada por la interacci\u00f3n con insectos como abejas, avispas, escarabajos y hormigas. Especies como magnolias, ficus y sasafrases empezaron a superar en n\u00famero a las plantas predominantes de periodos anteriores, como helechos, con\u00edferas, ginkgos y cicadas. Este cambio marc\u00f3 un antes y un despu\u00e9s en la historia de la vida terrestre.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, el final del per\u00edodo fue testigo de una de las extinciones masivas m\u00e1s significativas de la historia de la Tierra, hace aproximadamente 65 millones de a\u00f1os. Esta extinci\u00f3n provoc\u00f3 la desaparici\u00f3n de los dinosaurios no avianos, pterosaurios, mosasaurios, ammonites y muchas otras especies.
