Los mam\u00edferos dominaron esta era, adapt\u00e1ndose al clima durante las eras glaciales. Entre los carn\u00edvoros destac\u00f3 el Tigre Dientes de Sable, mientras que entre los herb\u00edvoros sobresalieron los Mamuts lanudos.<\/p>\n<p>Durante este per\u00edodo se produjeron extinciones tanto por factores naturales como por la acci\u00f3n humana. Entre los extintos naturales, los cambios clim\u00e1ticos jugaron un papel clave, mientras que los animales extintos por el hombre sufrieron por la caza intensiva y la destrucci\u00f3n de sus h\u00e1bitats.<\/p>\n<p>En Am\u00e9rica del Sur, el prolongado aislamiento geogr\u00e1fico permiti\u00f3 el desarrollo de especies \u00fanicas que enriquecieron la biodiversidad global. Y si esto continua como hoy en d\u00eda, los animales extintos por el hombre seguir\u00e1n sumando a causa de la actividad humana.<\/p>\n<p>Con el paso de los a\u00f1os, especies raras de la fauna del Cuaternario van desapareciendo del planeta debido a la acci\u00f3n desmedida del hombre. S\u00ed, es verdad que algunos animales se extinguen por diversas razones como las complejas cuestiones evolutivas de adaptaci\u00f3n, pero tambi\u00e9n es cierto que muchas especies desaparecen de la superficie de la Tierra debido a la caza irracional practicada por los seres humanos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Extintos naturales<\/strong> Es dif\u00edcil calcular el n\u00famero de animales extintos y la cifra real siempre es m\u00e1s alta que el n\u00famero estimado. En algunos casos se puede presumir que una especie ha dejado de existir al no ser vista durante a\u00f1os, sin embargo se debe esperar a que se declare oficialmente este estatus por la Uni\u00f3n Internacional para la Conservaci\u00f3n de la Naturaleza. Lo m\u00e1s complejo de este tema, es que la extinci\u00f3n no es un problema hist\u00f3rico, sino que un tema contempor\u00e1neo.<\/p>\n<p>A trav\u00e9s de la evoluci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica, nuevas especies surgen a trav\u00e9s de la especiaci\u00f3n durante la fauna del Cuaternario, as\u00ed como tambi\u00e9n otras especies se extinguen cuando ya no son capaces de sobrevivir en condiciones cambiantes o frente a otros competidores lo que denominamos como extintos naturales. Normalmente, una especie se extingue dentro de los primeros 10 millones de a\u00f1os posteriores a su primera aparici\u00f3n, aunque algunas especies, denominadas f\u00f3siles vivientes, sobreviven pr\u00e1cticamente sin cambios durante cientos de millones de a\u00f1os. La extinci\u00f3n es hist\u00f3rica y usualmente un fen\u00f3meno natural.
