La cueva de Skhul se encuentra en el monte Carmelo, cerca de Haifa, mientras que Qafzeh est\u00e1 en el monte del Precipicio, en Nazaret (Baja Galilea). Los restos humanos recuperados en ambos lugares tienen entre 80.000 y 120.000 a\u00f1os de antig\u00fcedad. Suelen estudiarse de manera conjunta porque comparten rasgos anat\u00f3micos y culturales: pertenec\u00edan a poblaciones con industria musteriense y muestran una combinaci\u00f3n de caracter\u00edsticas propias de humanos arcaicos (como los neandertales) y de humanos modernos.[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\u00bb2_3,1_3&#8243; Inicialmente fueron clasificados como neandertales bajo el nombre Palaeoanthropus palaestinensis (Weidenreich, 1932), aunque posteriormente se atribuyeron a Homo sapiens tempranos, si bien su relaci\u00f3n exacta con los humanos modernos sigue siendo objeto de debate.<\/p>\n<p>Los f\u00f3siles de Skhul y Qafzeh presentan una mezcla de rasgos arcaicos y modernos. Las dataciones mediante resonancia paramagn\u00e9tica electr\u00f3nica y termoluminiscencia sit\u00faan su antig\u00fcedad entre 80.000 y 120.000 a\u00f1os. Su capacidad craneal es comparable a la de los humanos actuales, pero conservan arcos superciliares marcados y un rostro proyectado, rasgos t\u00edpicos de los neandertales. Durante d\u00e9cadas se interpretaron como formas transicionales entre neandertales y humanos modernos, o incluso como h\u00edbridos. En la cercana cueva de Kebara se han encontrado neandertales datados entre 61.000 y 48.000 a\u00f1os, pero se ha propuesto que los grupos de Skhul y Qafzeh desaparecieron hacia los 80.000 a\u00f1os debido a un clima m\u00e1s fr\u00edo y seco, lo que habr\u00eda permitido el retorno de poblaciones neandertales sin que ambos grupos llegaran a coexistir.<\/p>\n<p>Una hip\u00f3tesis m\u00e1s reciente sostiene que los hom\u00ednidos de Skhul y Qafzeh representan la primera salida de humanos modernos desde \u00c1frica hace unos 125.000 a\u00f1os, probablemente a trav\u00e9s de la pen\u00ednsula del Sina\u00ed. Sus rasgos robustos ser\u00edan, por tanto, caracter\u00edsticas primitivas de Homo sapiens y no rasgos neandertales. El hallazgo de herramientas modernas de unos 125.000 a\u00f1os en Jebel Faya (Emiratos \u00c1rabes Unidos) podr\u00eda indicar una dispersi\u00f3n a\u00fan m\u00e1s temprana. En 2018 se anunci\u00f3 que restos humanos modernos hallados en la cueva de Misliya, en el monte Carmelo, hab\u00edan sido datados en unos 185.000 a\u00f1os, lo que adelanta todav\u00eda m\u00e1s la cronolog\u00eda de la expansi\u00f3n fuera de \u00c1frica.<\/p>\n<p>Los investigadores Ian Wallace y John Shea desarrollaron una metodolog\u00eda para analizar los conjuntos de n\u00facleos l\u00edticos del Paleol\u00edtico Medio en el Levante, con el objetivo de identificar patrones de movilidad entre distintas poblaciones humanas. Su m\u00e9todo compara la proporci\u00f3n de n\u00facleos \u201cformales\u201d y \u201cexpedientes\u201d para distinguir estrategias de desplazamiento entre neandertales y humanos modernos.<\/p>\n<p>En 2005 se estudiaron siete dientes procedentes de la cueva de Tabun (Israel) y se determin\u00f3 que probablemente pertenec\u00edan a un neandertal que vivi\u00f3 hace unos 90.000 a\u00f1os. Otro individuo de Tabun (C1) fue datado en 122.000 a\u00f1os. Si estas fechas son correctas, neandertales y humanos modernos tempranos pudieron coincidir en la regi\u00f3n, lo que abre la posibilidad de que los hom\u00ednidos de Skhul y Qafzeh tengan alg\u00fan grado de ascendencia neandertal.<\/p>\n<p>Los humanos modernos no africanos poseen entre un 1% y un 4% de ADN neandertal, lo que sugiere episodios de hibridaci\u00f3n en Oriente Pr\u00f3ximo. Sin embargo, tambi\u00e9n se ha planteado que los grupos de Skhul y Qafzeh representen un linaje extinguido. En ese caso, la salida de \u00c1frica de los antepasados directos de los humanos modernos habr\u00eda ocurrido hace unos 70.000 a\u00f1os, siguiendo la ruta del estrecho de Bab\u2011el\u2011Mandeb entre Eritrea y la pen\u00ednsula Ar\u00e1biga, la misma v\u00eda propuesta para los autores de las herramientas de Jebel Faya.<\/p>\n<p>En la cueva de Skhul se descubrieron entre 1925 y 1935 diez individuos (siete adultos y tres ni\u00f1os), algunos de ellos enterrados intencionalmente. El cr\u00e1neo Skhul 5 muestra arcos superciliares prominentes, t\u00edpicos de humanos arcaicos, pero tambi\u00e9n una frente alta propia de Homo sapiens. Skhul 9 presenta similitudes con poblaciones actuales del \u00c1frica occidental, aunque conserva rasgos arcaicos como el prognatismo y los arcos superciliares marcados.<\/p>\n<p>La cueva de Qafzeh fue excavada por Ren\u00e9 Neuville en 1934, encontr\u00e1ndose restos de cinco individuos, hogares, enterramientos, herramientas de s\u00edlex y fauna (gacelas, caballos, gamos, b\u00f3vidos y rinocerontes). Excavaciones posteriores a\u00f1adieron m\u00e1s restos humanos. Qafzeh 6, descubierto en 1934, es un individuo masculino con algunos rasgos neandertales, aunque m\u00e1s cercano a Homo sapiens. Qafzeh 9, probablemente una mujer joven, presenta rasgos claramente modernos. Su grado de prognatismo es menor que el de los neandertales, Kabwe y Jebel, similar al de Skhul 4 y Skhul 5, y mayor que el de Homo helmei y los Homo sapiens actuales de Eurasia y el norte de
