El t\u00e9rmino Eurypterida procede del griego eury (\u201cancho\u201d) y pteron (\u201cala\u201d), una referencia directa a las amplias estructuras natatorias que caracterizan a muchos miembros del grupo. Tambi\u00e9n se los ha llamado gigantostr\u00e1ceos, y aunque popularmente se los conoce como \u201cescorpiones marinos\u201d, este nombre es enga\u00f1oso: los Eurypterida no eran escorpiones, no pose\u00edan gl\u00e1ndula venenosa y no estaban estrechamente emparentados con ellos.[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\u00bb2_3,1_3&#8243; M\u00e1s de 300 especies de Eurypterida han sido descritas, lo que demuestra que se trat\u00f3 de un grupo diverso, exitoso y ampliamente distribuido durante cientos de millones de a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Su cuerpo estaba dividido en dos regiones principales: el prosoma, equivalente al cefalot\u00f3rax, y el opistosoma, o abdomen. Este \u00faltimo se subdivid\u00eda en un mesosoma y un metasoma, cuyo segmento final formaba un telson bien desarrollado. Esta organizaci\u00f3n corporal, t\u00edpica de los quelicerados, permit\u00eda a los Eurypterida combinar protecci\u00f3n, flexibilidad y capacidad locomotora en ambientes acu\u00e1ticos y anfibios. Sobre el prosoma, los Eurypterida pose\u00edan dos ojos compuestos similares a los de los trilobites y xifosuros, adem\u00e1s de un par de ocelos simples que complementaban la percepci\u00f3n lum\u00ednica. La boca, situada ventralmente, estaba precedida por un par de quel\u00edceros, una caracter\u00edstica definitoria de los quelicerados y, por tanto, de los Eurypterida. Detr\u00e1s de la boca surg\u00edan seis pares de ap\u00e9ndices especializados, cuyas bases ensanchadas, llamadas gnatobases, cooperaban en la manipulaci\u00f3n y trituraci\u00f3n del alimento. El \u00faltimo par de ap\u00e9ndices, ensanchado en forma de aletas, era fundamental para la nataci\u00f3n y explica el nombre Eurypterida, ya que estas \u201calas anchas\u201d eran esenciales para su desplazamiento en el agua.<\/p>\n<p>El mayor Eurypterida conocido hasta la fecha es Jaekelopterus rhenaniae, descubierto cerca de la ciudad alemana de Pr\u00fcm. A partir de una enorme quela fosilizada, se ha estimado que este Eurypterida alcanzaba unos 2,5 metros de longitud y un peso aproximado de 180 kilogramos, lo que lo convierte en uno de los mayores artr\u00f3podos que jam\u00e1s hayan existido. Este Eurypterida vivi\u00f3 hace unos 400 millones de a\u00f1os, durante el Dev\u00f3nico Inferior, en un entorno deltaico compuesto por pantanos y marismas. Su tama\u00f1o colosal sugiere que este Eurypterida ocupaba un papel dominante en su ecosistema, probablemente como depredador de gran tama\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>La locomoci\u00f3n de la especie ha sido objeto de debate. En alg\u00fan momento se propuso que los Eurypterida nadaban boca arriba, pero la posici\u00f3n de los ojos parece contradecir esta hip\u00f3tesis. Es posible que los Eurypterida juveniles adoptaran esta postura, como ocurre hoy en d\u00eda con los xifosuros, pero en los adultos la evidencia apunta a una nataci\u00f3n convencional. La respiraci\u00f3n de los Eurypterida se basaba en cinco pares de branquias laminares situadas ventralmente en los segmentos del mesosoma, lo que indica una clara adaptaci\u00f3n a la vida acu\u00e1tica. Adem\u00e1s, los Eurypterida presentaban ap\u00e9ndices dim\u00f3rficos que permit\u00edan distinguir dos sexos, aunque la asignaci\u00f3n precisa de cada tipo sigue siendo incierta debido a la falta de tejidos blandos preservados.<\/p>\n<p>Los primeros Eurypterida eran marinos, pero su mayor prosperidad se produjo en ambientes continentales de aguas someras, como marismas, lagunas costeras y estuarios, especialmente abundantes durante el Carbon\u00edfero. Hay indicios de que muchos Eurypterida llevaban una existencia anfibia, desplaz\u00e1ndose por tierra firme de manera similar a ciertos cangrejos modernos. Esta capacidad habr\u00eda ampliado enormemente el nicho ecol\u00f3gico de los Eurypterida, permiti\u00e9ndoles explotar recursos tanto acu\u00e1ticos como terrestres.<\/p>\n<p>El registro f\u00f3sil muestra que los Eurypterida aparecieron por primera vez en el Ordov\u00edcico medio, aunque existen f\u00f3siles dudosos que podr\u00edan remontarse al C\u00e1mbrico medio. Su historia evolutiva se extendi\u00f3 hasta la gran extinci\u00f3n masiva del final del P\u00e9rmico, que marc\u00f3 el comienzo del Mesozoico y acab\u00f3 con la mayor\u00eda de los ecosistemas marinos dominantes del Paleozoico.
